Chapter Twenty-Two

Caroline let go of Isaac’s hand when they arrived back at the Wentworth. She wanted to keep holding on, but she couldn’t allow herself that freedom. Someone would see. And neither could afford to let that happen.

Today’s events—seeing Liam and rehashing their old relationship with Isaac—had hollowed her out. She felt emotionally bruised but also lighter and free, like a deflated balloon that was about to bounce off a cliff.

However, she didn’t have time to dwell on her feelings. Delfina, the night manager, spotted her and waved her over to make a report. She was with Stephan at the concierge desk.

“One other thing,” Delfina said after giving Caroline a concise run-down. “The chef had a slight meltdown when the sous-chef didn’t show up.”

Caroline frowned, checking over the occupancy report on the manager’s tablet. “What happened?”

“Food poisoning.”

Her head snapped up. “What?”

Delfina held up a hand. “Don’t worry, he didn’t eat what made him sick here.”

Relieved, Caroline’s shoulders sagged and she blew out a breath. “Good. Did you get her some extra help?”

Ever since the hotel review had come out in the trade journal, local papers had been mentioning the hotel more and more. The reservations for their fine-dining restaurant had gone through the roof. Cerise Lions, the chef, liked to complain about it, but she secretly thrived on the stress.

“We had some trouble there,” Delfine said cautiously. “It turns out the sous-chef had eaten out with some of the other kitchen staff. When we tried our one remaining alternate, we couldn’t get through to her because she was ill as well. We ended up having to call in one of the grill cooks from the café.”

Oh God. “What did Cerise do?” Caroline asked, waiting for the shoe to drop.

“The grill cook did a good job,” Delfina said, patting her on the arm. “She ended up loving him and intends to poach him from the café—with your approval, of course.”

“She can have him,” Caroline decided, glad that disaster was averted. She was also pleased that her star chef was easy to appease. That had not always been the case. “Start looking for someone for the café.”

“Will do, boss.”

“I’m sorry to interrupt,” Stephan said, his eyes fixed over her shoulder. “Did you need something, Mr. Rivera?”

Caroline glanced back. Well, he is extremely hard to ignore.

“I’m just waiting to walk Ms. Wentworth to her door.”

“All right…” Stephan said slowly before turning back his computer.

“Is everything all right with you, Stephan?” she asked. “No fires to report?”

“Not a one.” He smiled a touch too broadly. “The guests kept the crazy requests down to a minimum today.”

“That’s always good news.” Her mind already on tomorrow’s tasks, she bade them goodnight.

Isaac fell in step behind her. They made it to her hallway without incident. However, it still felt as if there were dozens of eyes on them.

He must have sensed her reticence because he saw her to her door without trying to convince her to invite him in. “Good night, Caroline,” he murmured before disappearing into her office.
